The Institute for Global Applied Environmental Analysis (GAEA) is an environmental research institution based in Rio de Janeiro. Our goal is to produce high quality scientific research aimed at informing and supporting policy decisions on the key environmental issues of our age. GAEA scientific approach is aligned with the new emerging field of Sustainability Science, focusing on the interactions between natural and social systems, and aiming to reconcile the needs of promoting sustainable development while safeguarding the planet’s life support systems. We understand that these challenges are better addressed when considering that local and global processes interact and that frequently the solutions to local problems involve global approaches, whereas answers to global issues are based on local actions.

Founded in 2009, GAEA has already provided valuable input to some of the most pressing global issues. We have published scientific articles and reports that have contributed to global scientific and policy discussions involving Climate Change, Deforestation, Biodiversity Conservation and Food Security. These contributions were made possible through collaborations and partnerships with world leading organizations and scientists. This global collaborative approach of addressing fundamentally interdisciplinary questions by tapping into the knowledge and insights from world leaders in their fields is a defining characteristic of our institute.
